Scientist Founding Fathers

Independence Day (the Fourth of July) celebrates America’s adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Along with the fireworks and barbecues, the 4th of July might remind you of our Founding Fathers who drafted and signed the Declaration of Independence.

Like many men (and some women) of the time, Benjamin Franklin was more than just a politician—he was a polymath. A writer, scientist, and inventor, Benjamin Franklin invented the Franklin stove, bifocal glasses and swim fins; he worked with sailors to chart and name the Gulf Stream; and, of course, his interest in electricity drove him to conduct the famous kite-and-key experiment. His self-education earned him honorary degrees from four different universities: Harvard, Yale, Oxford University in England, and the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

Happy 4th!
