Once again, Geek Girl Con proves that geek/nerd conventions can be inclusive and welcoming in addition to being loads of fun. Here are a few of our favorite things from GGC 2014:
Art!
I love Wendi Chen‘s illustrations. Her Adventure Time and Bee & Puppycat fanart are especially cute.
Robin Kaplan’s illustration art (aka the Gorgonist) is wonderful (and “monstrously charming”)! Check out her Etsy store for prints.
My favorite thing about Brittany Fuerst‘s art is actually her little demon mascot–that and this painting of a pudgy hippogryph chickAmanda Lien‘s nerdy bunny mashup art is great. (We’re not at all biased by our Office Bunnies!)
Merch!
I’ve known about Espionage Cosmetics since last year’s Geek Girl Con, but never really looked into their products. Their nail wraps include science geeky and nerdy themes, and their “everything shadow” powder and lip serum are free of all the stuff I try to avoid in cosmetics (like parabens). That makes me so happy! Now if only they would make foundation…
Careful It Bites makes a lot of cute, creepy critters. Their flasher bats are hillarious! (You can find them at their Etsy store)
Scholarships!
The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) offers scholarships for undergraduate women in science in Washington State. (More info on that to come shortly!)
The Washington State Opportunity Scholarship provides money for Washingtonian undergraduate students majoring in science, technology, engineering, math, health, and other high-demand fields. The application for 2015-2016 will be available in January! More info, including eligibility and application, on their website.
